Mabel Marie (Riegel) Poetker, age 89, of Jackson, passed away on Thursday, August 1, 2024, at Holzer Medical Center in Gallipolis. She was born September 3, 1934, in Jackson, to the late Robert and Ruth (Deemer) Riegel.
She is survived by her daughters, Susan (E.W.) Johnson, of Louisville, KY and Ann (Cliff) Hardin, of Richmond, VA, daughter-in-law, Carol Anderson Poetker, of Jackson; grandchildren, Morgan Vihlidal, Ashley (Shaun) McKiernan, Courtney Carter, all of Louisville, KY, Daniel (Tarrah) Hardin, of Brandenburg, KY., Emily Hardin, of Orlando, FL, Alexander (Erin) Poetker, of Jackson, Ohio; great grandchildren, Joel McKiernan, Jacob McKiernan, Henry Vihlidal, Logan Vihlidal, Jackson Hardin, Wyatt Hardin, Caroline Hardin, Declan Poetker, and Davis Poetker. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Pat Riegel and Patty Riegel, and her dear cousin, Marsha Perry, and several special nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Joel S. Poetker; son, Samuel Robert Poetker; brothers, Stewart Riegel and Paul Riegel; mother-in-law, Wanda Poetker; grandson-in-law, Scott Carter
Mabel was born and raised in Jackson graduating from Jackson High School in 1952. Mabel and Joel married on September 12, 1954, at her parents’ farm on Beaver Pike, Jackson. They raised their family in Bexley, Ohio, later moving to Buffalo, NY before returning to Jackson in 1979 to be closer to family and where she lent a helping hand at her father’s business, the Jackson Implement. With her calm, can-do demeanor, she was a devoted wife and mother, always available for her family with a happy smile, and fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies. She enjoyed various clubs, especially bridge with her treasured life-long friends. Mabel and Joel enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. and Europe and made many trips to Canada, where they spent time with close friends. Most recently, Mabel enjoyed a full life at Holzer Assisted Living; she especially enjoyed the many visits from her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2024, from 11:30 – 1:00 at the Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home in Jackson. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 with Deacon Janie Karl officiating.
