John Joseph “Jack” Evans, age 92, passed from this life to the next on Friday, March 22, 2024.  Jack was diagnosed with cancer this past September.  He was blessed to spend his last six months at home in Jackson surrounded by family and friends.

Jack was born in Oak Hill, Ohio on January 27, 1932, to William (Bill) and Helen Evans.  He is survived by his wife, Jean Hale; son, Joe Evans (Pat); daughters, Pam Ondera (Paul), and Donna Lewis (John); sister, Roberta Arbaugh; and brothers, Gary Evans (Barb) and Leland Evans; grandchildren: Matthew Evans (June), Julie Folden (Gene), Joel Ondera (Beejay), Andrea Donald (Ryan), and Chris Ondera; great-grandchildren: Kenzie and Madelyn Evans, Reaghann, Ryan, Makenna, and Collin Folden, Levi, Ford and Sailor Ondera, and Nora Donald; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Fern (McClurg) Evans; parents, Bill and Helen Evans; brother, Billy Keith Evans; and sisters, Imogene Crabtree and Sue Haning.

Jack’s work life began in local coal mines and brickyards before joining the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 317 where he spent most of his career as a lineman electrician. Aptly nicknamed Jack, he was a “Jack of All Trades” who could fix anything and was always ready to help family, friends, neighbors, and strangers who needed help. Jack was selfless in his attitude toward those in need.

A longtime member of the Appalachian Old Car Club, Jack was an avid automobile enthusiast who, along with his son Joe, restored dozens of antique cars and trucks.  He was a Harley Davidson rider who made many road trips on his Electra-Glide with Fern and friends.

He was a member of the Good Shepherd Wesleyan Church in Jackson and was recently attending the Old Country Church Tabernacle in Oak Hill.  As a born again child of God, Jack’s eternal life was and is in the presence of His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Family, friends, and loved ones may attend a viewing at the Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home, 28 Harding Avenue in Jackson, Ohio from 5:00 to 8:00 PM on Monday, March 25th, 2024. A funeral service will be held at the Lewis and Gillum Funeral Home on Tuesday March 26th with viewing from 10:00 AM and the service at 11:00 AM.  If you would prefer to make a memorial gift in lieu of flowers, please do so to: National Church Residences who provided compassionate and loving Hospice care these past few weeks.  Donations can be made in Jack’s honor on-line at nationalchurchresidences.org.
