Delmer Ray Rakes of Oak Hill, Ohio passed away Sunday, October 16th, 2022, at the age of 92. He was born December 13th, 1929, in Dry Branch, West Virginia to the late Levi Chesley and Mary Polly (Damron) Rakes.


He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Thelma Loucreta (Adkins) Rakes; seven children: Janet (John) Forshey, Deborah (Michael) Hall, Timothy (Karla) Rakes, Polly (David Clyde) Hurd, John (Denise) Rakes, June (Chuck) McNeely, and Rushie Richmond; his sister, Mary Ellen Lovejoy; as well as 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers: Herman Rakes, Levi Rakes Jr., Howard Rakes, Pearly Rakes, Elmer Rakes, Arlie Rakes, and Jesse Rakes; one sister, Lucinda (Rakes) Adkins; son-in-law, Richard “Rick” Richmond; grandson, Thomas Anthony Rakes; and great-grandson, Levi Ray Edwards.


Delmer was a member of the Church of Christ of Jackson, Ohio which he preached at. He had worked in timber when he was a young boy. He helped build and worked at Osco back in the early 60’s. He also worked at the plastic plant, Banquet Foods, and worked part-time as a janitor at Oak Hill High School from 1972-1973. He has also worked at Jeno’s Foods and the Campbell’s Mushroom Farms.


Per his wishes, a graveside service and burial will be held on Wednesday, October 19th, 2022, at 11AM at the Adkins Family Cemetery. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.lewisgillum.com.
