Alma Mary Lemon, age 94, passed away peacefully on January 23rd, 2024. She was born in Portsmouth, Ohio, on July 20th, 1929.
She is survived by her daughter, Peggy (Mark) Parrish; son, Steve (Carol Ann) Lemon; her four grandchildren to whom she was lovingly known as Maw Maw: Nicole Cadigan, Carrie Flegle, Christopher Lemon, and Evan Parrish; along with six great-grandchildren; as well as her lifelong friend/brother-in-law, Paul Wagner.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 74 years of marriage, Howard G. Lemon and her twin sister, Adah Ruth Wagner.
Alma was raised in Wheelersburg, Ohio, attended school, and married there. She received her undergraduate degree in education from Rio Grande College and obtained her master’s degree via night and weekend school from Marshall University. Her first teaching assignment was in the 3rd and 4th grade at the small three-room Hamilton School in the Oak Hill School District. She went on to teach 4th grade at Central in Oak Hill, then at Blackfork. After obtaining her counseling certificate from Marshall University, she served as counselor for the elementary schools in Oak Hill. She served solely for the Oak Hill School District for 30 years. Alma remained active in the Oak Hill community, Jackson County Farm Bureau, Eastern Star, and St Paul’s Methodist Church activities. Second to family, teaching was her passion, and she was well respected and trusted for her work with both students and their families.
A viewing will be held at the Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home of Oak Hill from 11:30AM-1PM on Sunday, January 28th, 2024. A funeral service will follow at 1PM at the funeral home with burial after at Horeb Cemetery. Online condolences may be sent to www.lewisgillum.com.
